HG May Newsletter:

Welcome back to another edition of the Healthy Gatherings Newsletter. We've been working at this for several months and really do appreciate all your questions and comments. Even though the Healthy Gatherings program has been in existence for five years now, this launching of our programs outside our area in the Pacific NorthWest has been exciting as well as a little scary. We are beginning to work with several health & fitness professionals across the country in this program and I am certain that over time we will have a presence in most communities. Our goal of providing current, accurate, and relevant health & wellness information to the public is on its way and we thank you for being on the front end of this movement and appreciate the many questions and comments many of you have provided.

Bringing new service options to HG... Keep an eye on your email. In the next couple weeks Amy, the originator of the Healthy Gatherings program will have a blog available to all HG members. It will be an excellent opportunity for you interact, question, and learn from one of most knowledgeable fitness professionals around. We'll send you a short notice when that blog is up and running.

Body Talk - Aerobic & Resistance Training

You are so excited, you joined your local club and the group fitness (aerobics) class is about to start. It begins smooth enough, until you hear your instructor say "listen to your body and modify accordingly." You think.. WHAT? Does my aerobics instructor really think my body is going to speak to me? Listen to what? What should I expect to hear?

The instructor is letting you know that at times you are responsible for understanding your body's fitness capabilities and limitations. While your instructor is most likely trained in recognizing how participants are doing in the group exercise setting and they realize not everyone is at the same level at the same time, they can't see everything and can't feel what your body is saying nearly as well as you. The instructor, knowing he/she is limited in reading your outward signs, will try to teach you how to listen to your body and should be offering modifications to most all complicated or high impact movements. The modifications will give you the options you need to keep your exercise program safe and effective.

Your body may talk to you in a number of ways. Have you ever done repetitive exercises for a period of time and experienced a burning sensation? This sensation is from the build up of lactic acid and excess hydrogen ions in the muscles. It is signaling you to slow down and allow your muscles to get the necessary oxygen they need to recover or get to a level they can maintain.

What do you think your body is saying when you find yourself gasping for breath? It's most likely screaming at you that your intensity is to high and it wants more oxygen. Slow down and allow your lungs to catch up. If it's an interval class that same feeling is telling you you're appropriately working at a high intensity for that shorter period of time. Your ability to sustain intense workouts will increase over time. Try to maintain a level that allows you to carry on a conversation during the workout.

If it hurts don't do it. The saying remains true in exercise today. Pain is a loud signal from your body that something is up. Slow down or stop immediately. Check with your instructor or trainer to make sure you're doing the movement correctly. If pain persists you may need to see your personal physician.

You were told when the nice man gave you the tour of the gym that regular exercise will give you more energy, but your body says your exhausted at the end of your exercise routine. This may mean your over-training, not getting sufficient recovery time between workouts, or you are simply pushing to hard during the workout itself. Slow down, remember the F.I.T.T. Principle, which gives you the elements for your optimal health. It includes guidelines for exercise intensity, duration, exercise type and frequency.

Pay attention to your body. It can tell you many things. When you hear it talking.. listen and follow its advice. Don't allow your ego to cause you to try and keep up with the person on the step, treadmill, or squat rack next to you. You are competing only against your best self. Use your group fitness instructor's modifications or make the life time investment of utilizing a certified professional personal trainer to at least get you going. It won't be to long before you are the one others wish they were keeping up with.

Protein Supplementation -
For Healthy Muscles, Bones, and Body

Pure natural building blocks for a healthy body are constructed of proteins and the amino acids that make them up. 60-70% of our body's protein can be found in the muscle tissue. For many years there has been a common understanding that the supplementation of protein was only necessary for the extreme athlete or bodybuilder. That is now known not to be the case and increased protein consumption is recommended for many people of all ages and activity levels.

There are many food options when searching for your protein sources. The draw back to food sources is they often come with related constituents, that you may not be looking for, or do not include elements that are necessary for complete protein make up. Saturated fat is one element that is often found in animal sources of protein that you limit your consumption of. Plant sources of protein will eliminate the saturated fat issue, but they only provide an incomplete amino acid make up of the protein.

Protein supplementation in your diet can provide several benefits. It's often more easily prepared than a standard food source and is designed to provide a full compliment of all essential amino acids and branch chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine, and valine). Protein supplements also provide you with specific labeling so that you can account for total caloric intake as well as other included vitamin and mineral nutrients.

The two most common types of protein supplements are soy based and whey based. There are benefits and draw backs to each. Primarily with soy protein you will want to ensure it is enriched, as soy itself is not a complete source of all amino acids. Whey protein tends to be more easily absorbed, but is dairy- based and anyone with dairy allergies may develop stomach discomfort when using this type of protein.

Protein will supply many benefits to any body.

  • Stabilizes blood sugar
  • Slows production of stress hormone cortisol, while promoting release of serotonin.
  • Promotes fat loss by enhancing release of glucogon, while inhibiting the release of insulin.
  • Stimulates protein synthesis, which is important for healing of muscle injury from accident or exercise.
  • Enhances immune system by raising the body's glutathione production.
  • Enhances weight management when balanced into total caloric intake, protein will require more energy to digest (thermic effect) and result in more calories burnt.

Protein needs will vary based on your age, weight, sex, activity level, and overall health. Recommendations range from .8 grams to 1.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight daily. Consult your doctor or a dietician to determine your personal requirements.

Whether you are a fitness enthusiast, growing child or teenager, pregnant or lactating women, older adult, an athlete, or bodybuilder, the benefits of adequate protein intake are obvious. If you are having any difficulty achieving optimal protein intake from your daily healthy meals, consider using a quality protein supplement. Supplementing with a simple protein shake can work great before and after workouts. It will also work excellent as a snack to hold back hunger craving between meals.
